DataFlux IDEAS 2010 – You Missed a Good One!
Oct 18, 2010 by Joyce Norris-Montanari in Data Governance
I just got back from the DataFlux IDEAS conference held in Palm Springs, CA. It was the best conference I have attended in a long time. I thoroughly love hearing about how companies are using these products to affect their bottom line, and implement data governance. I talked with people who implemented data governance on a national level as well as corporations who have pushed their data governance plan into their global facilities.
I got some great input from DataFlux customers on some of my own issues with a specific client. I learned that a “grass-root” effort for data governance (which includes data quality, etc.) CAN WORK! While management buy-in is very important, you can actually do the “in-your-face” method until they finally pay attention to your effort. These grass-root efforts usually start with one or two people. They purchase the technology, start down the path of discovery, report the findings, AND REPORT the findings, and continue reporting the findings until upper management takes notice. Hmmmm, I guess you run a 50/50 chance of this working – but what the heck, in some companies this technique may work just fine.
After you have upper management’s attention, you have to keep their attention. So, justification for more personnel to popularize the data governance plan will be very important. Don’t forget to factor in how you will monitor, audit and sustain your governance plan.
Another important item I found out about while at the conference: Pomegranate Martinis are a superfood! Who knew?
